Elkanah Penniman (son of Mr. Jeffe and Mrs. Lois Penniman) died March 28, 1704, aged four years. This stone is located in the Old Cemetery in Mendon, Massachusetts. It is very uncommon to see parentheses on gravestones. The image is an early and primitive winged skull represented the deceased's flight to Heaven. Meant to serve as a warning to the living that you too shall die, so do good deeds while on earth to ensure entrance to Heaven.
